Day three of the ongoing Edgbaston Test between England and India is expected to bring more action. India have taken firm control of the game after a dominant performance with the bat and early breakthroughs with the ball. After posting a massive first-innings total of 587, the visitors struck early with the ball and ended Day 2 on a high.
Now, as both teams prepare for a crucial third day, all eyes are also on the weather. According to AccuWeather.com, conditions are expected to be similar to the first two days. There may be some clouds during the day, but overall it should remain bright and sunny.
There is a very low chance of rain between 2 PM and 6 PM — just 7%, which makes a full day’s play likely. However, a brief spell of rain is possible after 7 PM. Still, the forecast suggests that the third day will mostly be uninterrupted, giving both teams a good opportunity to take charge.
England is trailing by 510 runs with seven wickets in hand
England began Day 2 hoping to take early wickets, but Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja had other plans. The pair looked at ease and steadily built a strong partnership. They added 203 runs for the sixth wicket, putting India in a commanding position.
Jadeja missed out on a century, falling for a well-made 89. Gill, meanwhile, continued his excellent form and brought up his maiden double century. He became only the third Indian batter to score a double hundred in Tests in England.
After Jadeja’s dismissal, Washington Sundar joined Gill. The pair added another 144 runs for the seventh wicket. Sundar contributed a handy 42, while Gill crossed the 250 mark. He looked set for a triple hundred but was eventually dismissed for a superb 269 off 387 balls.
The tail could not contribute much, and India were bowled out for 587 in 151 overs.
Despite Jasprit Bumrah missing from the Indian line-up, the pace attack made early inroads. Akash Deep struck twice in quick succession to dismiss both Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope for ducks. Mohammed Siraj then got Zak Crawley out for 19.
At 25/3, England were in deep trouble. However, Joe Root and Harry Brook steadied things slightly. They stitched together an unbeaten 52-run stand for the fourth wicket.
England ended Day 2 on 77/3 in 20 overs, still trailing by a huge 510 runs. On Day 3, Root and Brook will resume the innings, looking to rebuild. India’s bowlers, on the other hand, will aim for early wickets to press their advantage even further.
