England’s batters made the most of a bright and sunny day at Lord’s as they ended day one of the third Test against India at 251/4 in 83 overs. Joe Root led the way with a classy unbeaten 99, steering England into a strong position alongside captain Ben Stokes, who is not out on 39.
After opting to bat first upon winning the toss, England got off to a decent start. Openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett added 43 runs before India’s surprise bowling weapon of the day, Nitish Kumar Reddy, made an immediate impact. The young all-rounder dismissed both openers with some disciplined swing bowling.
Crawley got out for 18, while Duckett fell for 23, leaving England at 44/2. From there, Ollie Pope and Joe Root stitched together a 109-run partnership, frustrating the Indian bowlers through the middle session.
Pope looked well set but was eventually dismissed for 44 by Ravindra Jadeja, thanks to a sharp catch from substitute wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel, who replaced Rishabh Pant behind the stumps. Pant left the field after the 34th over following a blow to his left finger and did not return for the remainder of the day.
India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, returning to the playing XI after being rested for the Edgbaston Test, struck late in the day to remove Harry Brook for 11, reducing England to 172/4.
But Root and Stokes steadied the innings, adding an unbeaten 79-run stand for the fifth wicket. Root played with authority and elegance, inching closer to his 31st Test century and ending the day on 99 not out, while Stokes was content rotating the strike and playing the supporting role on 39*.
Weather Outlook for Day Two
As per AccuWeather, day two promises similar conditions to the first — warm and sunny with no rain threat. The temperature is expected to hover around 32°C, with only 2% chance of rain and 0% chance of thunderstorms, ensuring another full day of action at Lord’s.
With England poised at 251/4, they’ll look to build a big first-innings total. For India, early wickets in the morning session will be key to halting England’s momentum.
