Day one of the first Test between England and India at Headingley, Leeds, ended in favour of the visitors. After being asked to bat first by England captain Ben Stokes, India batted brilliantly. They fully used the bright, sunny weather, survived the early swing with the new ball, and finished strongly at 359/3 in 85 overs.
Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a superb century. Captain Shubman Gill and vice-captain Rishabh Pant remained unbeaten at stumps. Gill is not out on 127, while Pant is on 65*. With both set batters still at the crease, Indian fans will hope that they continue from where they left off on day two. However, the weather might become a concern.
India's batters took full advantage of the good batting conditions on the opening day. But day two might not be as favourable. According to AccuWeather.com, the forecast for 21 June 2025 reads: “Partly sunny and very warm; a couple of afternoon showers and a heavy thunderstorm; thunderstorms can bring flooding downpours, hail and damaging wind gusts.”
Rain is expected for around two hours, with an 86% chance of precipitation and a 34% chance of thunderstorms. So, all eyes will now be on the weather and how it might affect the flow of the match on day two.
Ben Stokes’ decision to bowl first has received a lot of criticism
Meanwhile, Stokes’ decision to bowl first came under heavy criticism from former England cricketers like Alastair Cook and Michael Vaughan. They were surprised to see him choose to field in such hot and humid conditions under clear skies. It appears Stokes was influenced by past statistics, which show that in the last six winning Tests at Headingley, only teams that bowled first ended up winning.
But as of now, the move seems to have backfired. If India manage to add significantly to their total, it will be a massive task for England to stage a comeback.
Gill is in sublime form, having scored his first Test century outside Asia. He is nearing the 150-mark. Pant will also aim for a century, having already crossed 3,000 career Test runs on day one.
