In the 2025–2026 season, domestic cricket in India will resume. Additionally, the first significant competition to begin the new season will be the Duleep Trophy 2025. August 28, 2025, will mark the start of the first-class competition. This season, the Duleep Trophy, one of the premier domestic red-ball tournaments in the country, will return to its zonal format.

After last year's switch to a four-team framework chosen directly by the national selectors, the red-ball event will signal the return of the classic zonal format and serve as an important prelude to India's lengthy home Test season.

Thus, the red-ball event will include teams from six zones. The teams will compete in a knockout format, with the finalists determined by two quarterfinals and semi-finals each. The final will last five days, while the quarterfinals and semifinals will last four days each.

Teams will compete under the North Zone, South Zone, East Zone, West Zone, Central Zone, and North East Zone flags in the redesigned format. North Zone will play East Zone in the first round of matches, and Central Zone will play North East Zone in the quarterfinals. The finalists from the previous zonal competition in 2023, South Zone and West Zone, have been granted straight access to the semifinals.

Five knockout matches will determine the winner of the tournament, which will take place from August 28 to September 15, 2025. All games, including the championship game, will be played at Bengaluru's BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground, lowering logistical obstacles and guaranteeing reliable playing conditions. There will be three games on the main field and two on Ground B. With fields built to handle professional red-ball cricket, this central location option should offer the best amenities for players and support personnel.
