India and West Indies kicked off their 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle with a two-match Test series at Windsor Park in Dominica on Wednesday. The series appears to be setting the tone for India's new batting order going forward, with two youngsters making their Test debuts.
In what can only be described as a dream come true moment, Ishan Kishan and Yashasvi Jaiswal received their Test caps from Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Years of hard work and dedication, followed by a magnificent performance in the Indian Premier League 2023, have finally paid off for Jaiswal. Kishan, on the other hand, has managed to represent India in all formats of the game.

Hopefully, this works for us in the long term: Rohit
The debut of the duo was disclosed by the Indian skipper a day before the series opener. Rohit also confirmed that India will try a new opening pair in order to have a right-hand left-hand combination in the top order. Jaiswal will replace Shubman Gill, who will take the No. 3 spot of the veteran cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara, who was dropped owing to poor form.
“We have been desperate for a left-hander opener. Let’s hope, Yashasvi performs well for the team and makes that spot his own. Gill himself wants to play at No 3. He spoke to Rahul bhai about it as he has done well at No 3 & 4 in the last in domestic cricket. It also helps as we will get the left-right opening combination. Hopefully, this works for us in the long term,” Rohit said.
Meanwhile, Ishan Kishan has been chosen as the wicketkeeper instead of KS Bharat. Bharat was not impressive with the bat in the 2023 WTC final against Australia. The Caribbean tour will be a great opportunity for Jaiswal and Kishan to cement their place in India's longer format squad.
