Following Jonny Bairstow’s controversial dismissal in test 2 of Ashes 2023, the cricketing community has been commenting all out on the incident. So much so that even political leaders have joined the discourse. First, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak came up with a statement through his spokesperson. It was a matter of a short wait as his Australian counterpart retaliated with his own views.

"The prime minister agrees with (England captain) Ben Stokes who said he simply wouldn't want to win a game in the manner that Australia did," the spokesman said on behalf of the British Prime Minister. "I’m proud of our men’s and women’s cricket teams, who have both won their opening two #Ashes matches against England. Same old Aussies – always winning! Australia is right behind Alyssa Healy and Pat Cummins and their teams and look forward to welcoming them home victorious," Anthony Australia Albanese tweeted taking an indirect dig at English media for calling Aussies ‘cheat’.

Ben Stokes called out the Spirit of Cricket while discussing Jonny Bairstow's dismissal following the game

Talking of the dismissal, on the final day of Test 2 of the Ashes 2023, Jonny Bairstow attempted to duck a short delivery from Cameron Green. Following this, Ben Stokes walked carelessly out of his batting crease in the direction of his partner Ben Stokes. The Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey grasped the chance to remove the bails and staged one of the rarest dismissals in Cricket.

“My thoughts around it is, when is it justified that umpires have called ‘over’? Does the square-leg umpire making some movement justify that? Jonny Bairstow was in his crease and then came out to have a chat in the middle. I’m not disputing if it was out, it was. If the shoe was on the other foot, I would’ve had to think about the whole spirit of the game. But it has happened, it was out. We have to move on… Do I want to win in that manner? No,” said England skipper Ben Stokes after the game.
