On Thursday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed Ramesh Powar as the head coach of India’s women team. This will not be the first time that Powar will be doing the job as he was appointed for the same role in 2018 too. His stint with the Indian team was marred with controversies and he was sacked as the coach just months after his appointment.
Under Ramesh, India reached the semi-finals of the 2018 T20 World Cup but they lost the game to England. In the semi-finals. India left out their main batter Mithali Raj which raised a lot of eyebrows in the cricket fraternity. This was followed by Raj accusing Powar of humiliating her and trying to destroy her career.
Though Ramesh also hit back at the batter for trying to create chaos in the team, BCCI sacked Powar soon after his fallout with Raj. However, former Indian cricketer Deep Dasgupta believes that it’s time that Powar should sort out his issue with Mithali as the two will have to work together again.
Dasgupta is of the view that the feud between the two isn’t healthy for the team. Thus, Powar should take the first step and try to sort things out. Speaking to Sports Today, Dasgupta said, "We don't know what happened but we all know something happened there. Mithali is your 50-over captain, she is a legend, there are no two ways about it.
“That's the first thing which needs to be sorted. When you have somebody as senior and someone like Mithali, who already had an issue with Ramesh, I think one of the first things that need to happen is that phone call to sort things out."
