On 5 April 2023, Rajasthan Royals took on Punjab Kings in the eighth match of the ongoing Indian Premier League. Rajasthan were coming off after a win in their season opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad. On the other hand, Punjab were coming off after a win over Kolkata Knight Riders.

So, both teams were looking to continue their winning momentum in this clash in Guwahati. Speaking of the match, Sanju Samson won the toss and opted to bowl first. For Punjab, the skipper Shikhar Dhawan and Prabhsimran Singh came out to open the innings. However, they managed to give a solid start by taking apart the Rajasthan bowlers all around the park.

Prabhsimran scored 60 runs off 34 balls, including seven fours and three sixes. Then, Jitesh Sharma also scored 27 runs off 16 balls, including two fours and one six. Meanwhile, Bhanuka Rajapaksa got retired hurt as he got injured while standing at the non-striker end. But, it was Dhawan who scored 86* runs off 56 balls, including nine fours and three sixes. Finally, Punjab Kings scored 197 runs for four wickets in 20 overs. For Rajasthan, Jason Holder took two wickets while both Ashwin and Chahal picked up one wicket each.

Then, for the chase, Rajasthan Royals surprised everyone as Ravichandran Ashwin came out to open the innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal. But, the pair did not work as Jaiswal scored 11 runs and Ashwin managed a four-ball duck. Then, Jos Buttle came out but failed to show his magic with the bat. He scored 19 runs off 11 balls. Skipper Sanju Samson showed some fight before getting out on 42 runs off 25 balls, including five fours and one six. After that, Riyan Parag got out on 20 runs off 12 balls, with two sixes and one four. After that, Dhruv Jurel scored 32* runs off 15 balls while Shimron Hetmyer scored 36 runs off 18 balls. But, they managed only 192 runs for seven wickets in 20 overs and Punjab Kings won the match by five runs.
