Ending the speculations regarding MS Dhoni’s future with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), a CSK official has confirmed that MS Dhoni will be part of the franchise ‘as a player’ in the next season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). After a mediocre season of IPL in 2020, MS Dhoni scripted a remarkable turnaround for his side and helped them add fourth title to their cabinet.

Many speculated that the current season will be the last we see Dhoni as a player, especially with his lack of form with the bat, the veteran said he is far from over and will play his last game in Chennai. He, however, added that he is not sure if the franchise will retain him for the IPL 2022. It is learned that the BCCI will allow the franchises to retain only a handful of players and given Dhoni’s form with the bat, it was supposed to be a tricky call.

However, a CSK official confirmed that the franchise will use its first RTM (Right to Match Card) to retain MS Dhoni. “There will be retention and that is a fact. The number of retentions isn’t something we are aware of yet. But honestly, that is secondary in MS’ case because the first card will be used for him. The ship needs its captain and rest assured he will be back next year,” said CSK official as quoted by Sports Tiger.

Dhoni is not the player he used to be but he has one of the smartest brains in cricket and only his on-field tactics can help CSK go a long way. Earlier, former India cricketer Virender Sehwag had also asked CSK to retain Dhoni.

“It’s a phenomenal team. No one in Team India could beat Dhoni’s legacy and hopefully, it would be difficult for any other captain to do the same for CSK. I feel he has one more year left in him for Chennai. He must play next season and then retire,” said Sehwag while speaking to Cricbuzz.

Sehwag further added that it will be difficult for any skipper to match the legacy of MS Dhoni in IPL. “The legacy of the captain is known for the number of trophies he has won. And this captain has won four titles and played 9 finals. So, to match him up will be an uphill task for any other skipper. Rohit Sharma is indeed close but to play 9 season finals, he needs more time,” added Sehwag.
