CSK Playing XI, IPL 2025: Best probable playing XI of Chennai Super Kings

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are one of the most successful franchises in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). With five titles to their name, they share the record for the most IPL trophies with the Mumbai Indians (MI). Heading into IPL 2025, CSK will aim to secure a historic sixth title.

To prepare for the season, the team retained five key players: MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, Matheesha Pathirana, and Ruturaj Gaikwad. At the mega auction, they added 20 new players, rounding out a 25-member squad ready to don the iconic yellow jersey. 

Among the new signings, standout names include Ravichandran Ashwin, Rahul Tripathi, Vijay Shankar, New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra, and Afghanistan’s Noor Ahmad. Notably, CSK brought back Rachin Ravindra for ₹4 crore, a move regarded as a steal. Veteran spinner Ashwin returns to CSK, marking a homecoming for the player who was an integral part of the team from the inaugural season until 2015. 

Dhoni, CSK's talisman, was retained for ₹4 crore, benefiting from the revival of an old IPL rule that classifies Indian players without international appearances in the last five years as uncapped. Ruturaj is expected to lead the side and open the batting, likely alongside Conway. Rachin is well-suited for the number three spot.

Although he managed just 222 runs in 10 games last season, his strike rate of 160.87 showcased his ability to score quickly. At number four, CSK can choose between Rahul Tripathi and Vijay Shankar, both known for their aggressive batting. Shankar offers an additional bowling option, which could provide flexibility to the team.

Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja are likely to anchor the middle order at numbers five and six, expected to play crucial finishing roles. Dhoni, the designated wicketkeeper, will add valuable experience, though his batting position might vary depending on the match situation.

Ashwin, a key player in Chennai conditions, will contribute with both bat and ball, pairing with Jadeja to form a potent spin duo. Matheesha Pathirana and Khaleel Ahmed will lead the pace attack. Afghanistan's Noor Ahmad, with his left-arm wrist spin, could play a pivotal role, especially on turning tracks.

For away games, Nathan Ellis could be a valuable option, replacing Noor as the fourth overseas player, with his slower deliveries proving effective on different surfaces.
