England pace bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes is likely to be ruled out of the remainder of the fifth and final Test against India after suffering a shoulder injury on the first Day of the ongoing Oval Test on Thursday, July 31.
Woakes, who has been part of all five Tests in the ongoing five-match Test series, landed awkwardly while trying to stop a boundary late on Thursday. Eventually, he had to leave the field in pain.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) medical team is expected to have a scan overnight and give an update to the cricketing fraternity on Friday, August 1. However, his colleague Gus Atkinson feels he would be surprised to see Woakes coming back into the game.
"It doesn't look great. I will be surprised if he takes any part in the game. It's the last game of the series and when anyone gets injured it's a shame. We're hoping it's not too bad. Whatever it is, he will get full support from everyone,” Gus Atkinson told BBC Sport.
Interestingly, the England side has been dealing with multiple injuries and exhaustion. While their actual skipper, Ben Stokes, has been ruled out of the fifth Test with a shoulder injury, Brydon Carse and Jofra Archer have been rested to manage their workload.
Also, pacers like Mark Wood and Olly Stone have been absent from the squad for a long time due to their respective injuries. Furthermore, Woakes’ injury would be worrying the England side before the much-awaited Ashes series later this year.
Notably, Woakes bowled 14 overs on Day 1 and picked the crucial wicket of KL Rahul while conceding 46 runs. At stumps on Day 1, India were 204/6 in 64 overs with Karun Nair (52*) and Washington Sundar (19*) batting at the crease.
