The last year or so has been really hard on former New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns. After suffering aortic dissection in his heart and being put on life support, Cairns suffered lower-body paralysis. However, he started to show some signs of improvement. Unfortunately, he has another massive health complication to deal with now as he has been diagnosed with bowel cancer.
Cairns took to Instagram and confirmed the shocking development. He wrote that the news came as a big shock as he went for just a normal checkup and was not feeling any alarming symptoms. Cairns, however, is positive that he will fight the disease like a champion and come out victorious.
"As far as weeks go, I thought that Tom Brady retiring was going to be the low point this week… but as it turned out, TB12's retirement comes a distant second," Cairns wrote on Instagram. "I was told yesterday I have bowel cancer…big shock and not what I was expecting after what was supposed to be a routine checkup.
"So, as I prepare for another round of conversations with surgeons and specialists, I keep remembering how lucky I am to be here in the first place…and how blessed I am to have all that I do in my life. Wasn't all bad this week either, managed to get in some kids sport and celebrate (son) Noah's birthday at home. "Another fight ahead but here's hoping this one is a swift upper cut and over in the first round."
Cairns' life has been like driving on a zig-zag road, not easy at all. He was one of the most controversial cricketers during his playing days. His image was tarnished after fixing allegations in the 2008 Indian T20 League. In 2015, former teammates Brendon McCullum and Lou Vincent also alleged him for fixing. The charges of both cases though were cleared later. There was a point in his life when he had to drive trucks to pay his bills.
