India lost against Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final at the Oval on 11 June 2023 by 209 runs. It was another heartbreaking moment for the fans as India’s wait for a major title continues since 2013. But, after the final, the former Team India opener, Gautam Gambhir came up and called India an ‘individual obsessed’ country.
He claimed that in India, an individual player is bigger than the team. He also used an example with the image of Kapil Dev holding the 1983 World Cup trophy. Gambhir said that people only remember Kapil Dev for that triumph but no one remembers that Mohinder Amarnath was adjudged player of the crucial encounter for India.
“Our country is not team obsessed, it’s individual obsessed.” - Gautam Gambhir
While speaking on News 18 Hindi, Gambhir said: “Our country is not team obsessed, it’s individual obsessed. We count individuals bigger than our team, other countries like England, Australia, New Zealand, the team is bigger and not the individual.” Earlier, he also opened up about the hero worship culture in India and requested to put an end to that. During the post-match press conference, skipper Rohit Sharma said that all the necessary steps will be taken for the brand of cricket they want to play in the next two years of the WTC cycle.
He said: “Obviously, there will be some talks around it
Here is how fans have reacted to the statement from Gambhir:
