Champions Trophy: Why does the winning team wear white jacket?

India became the first team to win the Champions Trophy thrice after defeating New Zealand in the final on Sunday. Chasing a par target of 252 runs, India received a fiery start as Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill added 105 runs for the first wicket. It was the highest first wicket partnership in the tournament. Gill departed after scoring 31 runs off 50 deliveries, but Rohit remained in the middle and continued asking the Kiwi bowlers the right questions.

India faced some hiccups in the middle, but the Men in Blue were never out of the game. New Zealand bowlers remained on their toes throughout the Indian innings and took the match to the penultimate over. Ravindra Jadeja hit a boundary off the last delivery of the 49th over to seal the deal for the Indian team.

After winning the match, the match officials were presented with medals, followed by the New Zealand team. The Indian players first received the winning medals from Jay Shah, the Chairman of the International Cricket Council. After that, Roger Binny, the President of the BCCI, presented the white jackets to the players.

The white jacket has not been a part of the Champions Trophy for a long time. It was unveiled on August 13, 2009, and was designed by a Mumbai-based fashion designer, Babita M.

The International Cricket Council mentioned that the white jackets represent the highest standard of greatness and determination. They serve as a badge of honor worn by champions, reflecting the unwavering quest for tactical excellence and a legacy that motivates future generations. According to the ICC, earning the white jacket signifies the commitment to giving everything for the sake of victory.

“The ICC Men’s Champions Trophy showcases the pinnacle of cricketing excellence, and the introduction of the white jacket, a symbol of greatness, is set to enhance the excitement surrounding the event within the global cricket community,” stated Pakistan legend Wasim Akram in a promotional video for the Champions Trophy.
