Champions Trophy security compromised as Pakistan sacks 100 policemen

Pakistan’s security woes during the ICC Champions Trophy have deepened as the Punjab Police dismissed 100 officers for refusing to perform their duties. The move comes amid growing concerns over the safety of players and officials, particularly after India had already refused to play in Pakistan, resulting in all their matches being shifted to Dubai.

An official from the Punjab Police confirmed the dismissals, stating that the officers were assigned security duties for teams traveling between Qaddafi Stadium in Lahore and designated hotels. However, they were either absent from their positions or refused to carry out their responsibilities. “The police officials were assigned to provide security for teams travelling between Qaddafi Stadium Lahore and designated hotels but either remained absent or outright refused to take up their responsibilities,” the official said.

The incident has prompted action from Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab, Usman Anwar, who emphasized the importance of security at international sporting events. “There is no room for negligence when it comes to the security of international events,” he stated. Despite these dismissals, reports suggest that the long and exhausting duty hours could have contributed to the officers’ reluctance to work. Moreover, concerns have been heightened by warnings of abduction threats targeting foreign nationals attending the tournament.

Adding to the growing uncertainty, Pakistan’s intelligence agencies have reportedly issued warnings about a possible terror plot. However, Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar dismissed such concerns, assuring that the tournament was being conducted safely. “I would like to state on record that Pakistan is peacefully and very ably hosting the ICC Champions Trophy. Our grounds are full, we have fans from all over the world, the crowds are jubilant, our streets are filled with people who are celebrating the victory of cricket,” he said while speaking with GeoNews.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s performance in the tournament has been underwhelming, as they have already been eliminated following consecutive losses to New Zealand and India. Despite having one match left against Bangladesh, even a victory will not alter their fate in the competition. The situation remains tense, with both security concerns and Pakistan’s poor form dominating headlines.
