The ICC Champions Trophy is a one day international knockout tournament introduced in the year 1998 by the International Cricket Council. Later the tournament was known as ICC Knockout Tournament, and from 2002 onwards it was renamed as ICC Champions Trophy. There have been 13 teams that played in the tournament over the years, and they played in 8 big competitions! India is the most successful team winning the tournament.
In 1998, India's dream run ended in the semi-final against West Indies despite heroic fifties from Sourav Ganguly and Robin Singh. India had a great run in the 2000 "mini World Cup", but just fell short of the trophy! They beat Kenya and Australia, then beat South Africa very badly in the semis, all thanks to Saurav Ganguly's amazing 141 runs. Sadly, New Zealand's Chris Cairns crushed Ganguly in the final, and the Kiwis took home the trophy.
India was dominating the entire 2002 ICC Champions Trophy tournament, beating England, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. But in the finale, the rain played spoilsport, thereby ruining the final match against Sri Lanka, and they had to share the trophy!
In 2006, India's Champions Trophy campaign ended too early! They won against England, but lost to Australia and West Indies, and didn't make it through the group stage, and Australia took the trophy home!
India's 2009 Champions Trophy journey ended shortly. They beat the West Indies, but lost to Pakistan, and a washed-out match against Australia kept them from advancing past the group stage.
India's 2013 Champions Trophy win was pure magic! Led by MS Dhoni, they dominated the group stage, then easily beat Sri Lanka in the semis. In the rain-shortened final, India's bowlers - Jadeja, Ishant, and Ashwin - stole the show, beating England by just 5 runs in the end.
India's 2017 Champions Trophy defense ended in heartbreak. Led by Virat Kohli, they dominated the group stage and crushed Bangladesh in the semi-final, but fell to Pakistan in the final match. Fakhar Zaman's 114 runs helped Pakistan set a huge target, and despite Hardik Pandya's knock of 76 runs, India fell short, and lost their chances of winning the trophy.
