The ninth edition of the Champions Trophy concluded on March 9, with team India defeating New Zealand in the final in Dubai. The Kiwis had a fantastic journey throughout the tournament, and one of the key reasons behind their success was Rachin Ravindra.
The young batter displayed outstanding form, winning the Golden Bat for scoring the most runs in the tournament. He amassed 263 runs in four innings at an average of 65.75, including two centuries.
Over the years, many top cricketers from different countries have won the Golden Bat for being the highest run-scorer in their respective editions of the tournament. In the inaugural 1998 edition, West Indies’ Philo Wallace scored 221 runs in three innings at an average of 73.66, including one century and one fifty.
The Windies finished as runners-up, losing to South Africa in the final. In the 2000 edition, India’s Sourav Ganguly topped the charts with 348 runs in four innings at a staggering average of 116.00, including two centuries and one fifty. However, India finished as runners-up, losing to New Zealand.
The 2002 edition saw India and Sri Lanka declared joint winners. Virender Sehwag was the highest run-scorer, amassing 271 runs in five innings at an average of 90.33, including one century and one fifty.
England’s Marcus Trescothick led the run charts in the 2004 edition with 261 runs in four innings at an average of 65.25, including one century and two fifties. England, however, finished as runners-up, losing to the West Indies in the final.
In the 2006 edition, West Indies’ Chris Gayle recorded the highest individual tally in a single edition of the tournament, scoring 474 runs in eight innings at an average of 79.00, including three centuries.
Despite his heroics, West Indies finished as runners-up, losing to Australia. Ricky Ponting led Australia to glory in the 2009 edition and also finished as the highest run-getter with 288 runs in five innings at an average of 72.00, including one century and two fifties.
India’s Shikhar Dhawan won the Golden Bat in consecutive editions, scoring 363 runs in five innings in the 2013 tournament at an average of 90.75, including two centuries and one fifty. India emerged as champions.
He repeated his feat in the 2017 edition, amassing 338 runs in five innings at an average of 67.60, including one century and two fifties. India, however, finished as runners-up after losing to arch-rivals Pakistan in the final.
