Group B of the ongoing Champions Trophy is underway, with South Africa starting their campaign with a dominant 107-run win over Afghanistan in Karachi. The Proteas posted a massive total of 315/6 in 50 overs, thanks to wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton’s maiden ODI century. They then bowled out Afghanistan with 6.3 overs to spare.
After winning the toss, South Africa's skipper Temba Bavuma chose to bat first. However, opener Tony de Zorzi fell early for just 11 runs. Bavuma and Rickelton then steadied the innings, putting together a 129-run partnership for the second wicket before Bavuma was dismissed for 58 off 76 balls.
The momentum continued as Rassie van der Dussen (52 off 46) and Aiden Markram (52* off 36) also notched up half-centuries. Rickelton led the charge with a brilliant 103 off 106 deliveries before getting out. South Africa finished strongly with 315 runs on the board.
For Afghanistan, Mohammad Nabi picked up two wickets, while Fazalhaq Farooqi, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Noor Ahmad claimed one each. Star spinner Rashid Khan had an off day, going wicketless.
Let’s take a look at Afghanistan’s chase
Chasing 316, Afghanistan struggled from the start, losing wickets at regular intervals. Rahmat Shah fought a lone battle, scoring 90 off 92 balls, but none of the other batters managed to convert their starts into big scores.
As a result, they were bowled out for 208 in 43.3 overs, falling short by 107 runs. For the Proteas, Kagiso Rabada bagged three wickets while the other four bowlers also chipped in with crucial wickets in different phases.
Rickelton was named Player of the Match for his outstanding performance. South Africa will now face Australia in Rawalpindi on 25 February, while Afghanistan will look to bounce back when they take on England in Lahore on 26 February.
