Jos Buttler’s final match as England’s white-ball captain ended in disappointment as South Africa secured a dominant seven-wicket win in Karachi in the last Group B game of the ICC Champions Trophy. With this defeat, England finished their campaign without a single win in three matches, marking a forgettable end to Buttler’s leadership in limited-overs cricket.

South Africa’s all-rounder Marco Jansen was named Player of the Match for his impressive bowling (3/39) and sharp fielding, taking three catches. England won the toss and chose to bat first, but their batting lineup faltered once again. 

Apart from Joe Root (37 off 44), Jofra Archer (25 off 31), Ben Duckett (24 off 21), and Buttler (21 off 43), no other player managed to cross the 20-run mark. England was bundled out for just 179 runs in 38.2 overs, with Jansen and Wiaan Mulder picking up three wickets each.

Needing early breakthroughs to stand a chance, England dismissed both South African openers within 47 runs on the board. However, Rassie van der Dussen (72* off 87) and Heinrich Klaasen (64 off 56) stitched together a 127-run stand for the third wicket, ensuring a comfortable chase. 

The Proteas reached the target with seven wickets and 125 balls to spare. Archer took two wickets, while Adil Rashid claimed one. With this victory, South Africa topped Group B with five points from three matches, while Australia finished second with four points. 

Their semi-final opponents will be determined by the outcome of today’s India vs New Zealand clash in Dubai. If India wins and tops Group A, they will face Australia in the semifinal. However, if New Zealand triumphs, then India will play against South Africa.
