Rain played spoilsport as the much-anticipated clash between Australia and South Africa was abandoned due to persistent showers in Rawalpindi. Australia, fresh from their record-breaking chase against England, and South Africa, coming off a dominant win over Afghanistan, had to settle for a point each.
After a wait of 3 hours and 10 minutes from the scheduled start, and with two hours and 22 minutes remaining before the cut-off for a 20-over game, the match was officially called off. For Australian fans, this was a familiar disappointment—since 2009, there have been five washouts in this tournament, with Australia involved in every instance.
Meanwhile, South Africa missed a chance to avenge their 2023 ODI World Cup semi-final loss to Australia.
Qualification scenario for Group B
With this result, the group stage has become even more intriguing. Both South Africa and Australia are now tied at the top with three points each, with the Proteas leading on net run rate. Australia captain Steve Smith remained positive, emphasizing that their qualification path was clear—a win against Afghanistan would secure a semi-final spot.
“The equation is pretty simple now: if we beat Afghanistan we are locked in the top four. They are a dangerous side and we will have to be on our game. We have been able to fit in a few rounds of golf to keep the boys up and about. It has been really good so far – the rain today is not ideal but we will move on to the next one,” Smith said.
South Africa’s skipper, Temba Bavuma, echoed similar sentiments, assuring that Heinrich Klaasen was fit and ready for their upcoming fixtures. "Yeah, it is frustrating, we wanted to have some cricket and so did the fans, also wanting to watch two sides in confidence," said Bavuma.
Group B is now set for a thrilling finish, as Australia faces Afghanistan in Lahore on Friday, while South Africa takes on England in Karachi on Saturday. Both matches could serve as virtual quarter-finals. England and Afghanistan, currently on one point each, must win both their remaining games to stay in contention.
Brief scores:
The match was abandoned due to heavy rain.
