Champions Trophy 2025: Who won yesterday's game between Afghanistan vs Australia?

Another match in the ongoing Champions Trophy was disrupted by rain as the crucial clash between Afghanistan and Australia in Lahore was abandoned after 62.5 overs. Afghanistan batted first and put up a competitive 273 runs, but Australia responded with a flying start, reaching 109/1 in just 12.5 overs before rain intervened.

Despite a temporary break in the showers, the field conditions were deemed unfit for play, leading to the match being called off after an inspection. With both teams sharing a point each, Australia secured a semi-final spot with four points from three matches.

For Afghanistan, it was heartbreak as they finished with three points, leaving their qualification hopes hanging by a thread. Though a slight chance remains, it depends on an almost impossible equation in the South Africa vs England match in Karachi. Barring a miracle, Australia and South Africa will progress from Group B, with the top spot yet to be decided.

Match Summary

Afghanistan's innings was anchored by Sediqullah Atal (85 off 95) and Azmatullah Omarzai (67 off 63), who ensured a respectable total despite regular breakthroughs from Australia’s bowlers. The pace trio of Spencer Johnson (2), Ben Dwarshuis (3), and Nathan Ellis (1) accounted for six wickets, while spinners Glenn Maxwell (1) and Adam Zampa (2) took three.

In response, Australia raced to 109/1 in just 12.5 overs. Although Matthew Short fell for 20, Travis Head continued his aggressive approach, remaining unbeaten on 59 when rain ended proceedings. Afghanistan’s poor fielding proved costly as they dropped both Australian openers.

While Short’s drop did not hurt much, Head capitalised on the reprieve, punishing the Afghan bowlers with his attacking stroke play. During the post-match presentation, Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi remained hopeful despite the disappointment, saying: "You never know. We still have hopes and uh next game we are waiting for that in uh hopefully that uh England win big!"

However, the required margin for England’s victory to push Afghanistan into the semi-finals is almost impossible, making it likely that Australia and South Africa will be the two teams advancing.

Brief scores:
