Cricket Australia has officially confirmed the 15-man squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, scheduled to start on February 19 in Pakistan and Dubai. With Pat Cummins ruled out of the squad, Steve Smith is all set to lead the squad.
Unfortunately, Mitchell Starc has also withdrawn from the tournament due to personal reasons. Notably, Josh Hazlewood is also not part of the squad, which makes the pace trio miss the competition.
Moreover, Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of the campaign due to a back injury while the dashing all-rounder Marcus Stonis recently announced his sudden retirement from the 50-over format.
Starc, who will not be commenting about his decision and has asked for privacy, looked to be in discomfort with a left ankle issue in bowling just four overs during Sri Lanka's second innings of last week's final Test at Galle.
With the pace trio missing out on the showpiece event, Spencer Johnson, Nathan Ellis, Sean Abbott, and Ben Dwarshuis have been added to the squad. Aaron Hardie has been named as Stoinis’ replacement as the pace bowling all-rounder. Glenn Maxwell will share the spin bowling duties alongside Adam Zampa, the main spinner.
Emerging talented spinner Tanveer Sangha, who has been part of the 15-man squad after making it to the Sri Lanka tour for the Test tour, has also been part of the squad for the mega event.
Finally, the 21-year-old spin bowling all-rounder Cooper Connolly has also been named in the squad as the travelling reserve. Notably, most recently he earned his maiden cap in the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.
A look at Australia’s Champions Trophy squad:
