Champions Trophy 2025: 5 Best moments of the tournament

Yet another edition of the Champions Trophy came to an end after a thrilling season of games. The tournament was being organised after a gap of eight years and had some expectations to live up to. Here’s a list of the five best moments of the tournament.

1. Virat Kohli’s century against Pakistan

The contest between India and Pakistan is expected to be a high-voltage drama as the rivalry does not limit itself to the sport but has political differences as well. These clashes have traditionally been an encounter to witness, however, in the recent few years, it has been a one-sided affair.

Restricting Pakistan to just 241, it was not supposed to be a difficult chase but still pressure for it being an India-Pakistan rivalry was there. As usual, Virat Kohli stood there and the highlight at the end became whether he would be able to reach his century before chasing the total. Eventually, he finished the game with a boundary and scored yet another ton.

2. Glenn Phillips flying around the ground

There have been several discussions on who is the best fielder in the current set-up as well as in the all-time list. Phillips has not just put up his name in the list but has been breaking all queues to take his name to the top.

Athletes take one brilliant catch in a season which goes on to compete to become the best catch of the season with other athletes, however, he has been competing with himself. Grabs against Pakistan and then India, in the group stage as well as India, clearly stand as the three best catches of the tournament, defying gravity on all three occasions.

3. Australia’s historic chase

The fourth match of the tournament was scheduled between Australia and England where Australia won the toss and put England to bat first. A stellar partnership of 158 runs for the third wicket put England in a commanding position as they posted a record total of 351 runs.

Pretty confident of the total, England started well with the ball too. However, after the fall of the second wicket, the momentum started to build for Australia as they even upped their scoring rate. A blistering knock from Josh Inglis meant Australia made history as they won the game by 5 wickets.

4. Afghanistan beating England

Afghanistan has been a team on a meteoric rise in the last few years and they have upped their game significantly. They have been playing good cricket regularly and have started to beat the top nations of the game quite consistently at the biggest stages of all.

Playing in the 8th game of the Champions Trophy, Afghanistan elected to bat and struggled initially but a solid comeback led them to a total of 325. In a thriller of a game, they defended the score well to win the game by 8 runs. Ibrahim Zadran and Azmatullah Omarzai were clinical with their performances in the game.

5. India overcome the final hurdle

Team India, who have been such a dominant force across formats in the last few years found themselves in yet another final where they were facing a team that has been dominating them in the ICC Knockouts.

Beating the New Zealand side by four wickets in the final and winning the trophy after a gap of 12 years has to be the best moment of the tournament. Rohit Sharma led the side from the front with his performance as he was adjudged Player of the Match in the final and has become a rare captain with multiple trophies.
