On 12 July 2023, the first game of the two-match Test series between India and West Indies took place in Dominica. Both teams were looking for a winning start to their World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle. Speaking of the match, West Indies won the toss and opted to bat first.

They handed a debut cap to Alick Athanaze while India gave debut caps to Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan. So, the home team came out to bat but they disappointed their fans with the performance in their first innings. The Men in Blue bundled out them for just 150 runs in 64.3 overs. Ravichandran Ashwin took a fifer while debutant Athanaze was the highest scorer for the Windies.

He scored 47 runs off 99 balls, including six fours and one six. Then, in reply, all eyes were on Jaiswal and skipper Rohit Sharma when they came out to bat in India’s first innings. They both put up a great show and struck a solid partnership of 229 runs for the first wicket. Rohit departed after scoring 103 runs off 221 balls while Jaiswal hit the headlines by registering a century on his debut innings. Jaiswal smashed 171 runs off 387 balls, including 16 fours and one six. Apart from them, Shuman Gill failed to make any mark as he scored only six runs. Virat Kohli was looking solid until he departed for 76 runs off 182 balls, including five fours.

Finally, India declared after scoring 421 runs for five wickets in 152.2 overs and managed a lead of 271 runs. Hence, a huge task was waiting for the Windies’ batters as they were looking to go past that lead first and for a competitive target for Rohit and his men. But, Ashwin’s masterclass once again rattled them as the home side got bundled out for just 130 runs in 50.3 overs. Ashwin took a seven-for and finished the game with a 12-wicket haul. Thus, India won the game by an innings and 141 runs within three days and took a 1-0 lead. Yashasvi Jaiswal won the Player of the Match award for his mammoth knock.
