KL Rahul, Team India's vice-captain, had a forgettable year in 2022, finishing the season with an average of 14.25 in the two-match Test series against Bangladesh last month. Despite leading India to a 2-0 series win over Shakib al Hasan's side, the stand-in captain managed only 22 runs with the bat.

After posting pictures on social media with his girlfriend Athiya Shetty, the India opener was once again trolled by Indian cricket fans. Rahul is expected to marry Athiya later this month, which is why he has been given a break from the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, which begins on Tuesday (January 3).

One Twitter user wrote, “Brother, now you stay with your wife and don't come back to the Indian cricket team because you are no longer needed in #Teamindia. You are the burden in the team.” Another said, “Pls don't return until 4-5 yrs . This would be your best chance to serve Indian cricket”.

Rahul will be back in action for the Sri Lanka One-Day Internationals, which begin on January 10 in Guwahati. Prior to that, the Hardik Pandya-led side will face the visitors in a three-match T20I series that begins on Tuesday in Mumbai.

Rahul has been rested for the T20Is, along with Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and other senior players. Since the team has begun preparations for the ODI World Cup later this year, the seniors will be concentrating solely on the 50-over format.

In the meantime, the Indian Cricket Board held a team review meeting in Mumbai on Sunday (January 1), which was attended by President Roger Binny, Secretary Jay Shah, India captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Rahul Dravid, NCA chief VVS Laxman, and chief selector Chetan Sharma. According to media reports, the board has shortlisted 20 players for the ODI World Cup 2023, who will be rotated throughout the year.
