According to reports published on The Indian Express, the Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has requested the Indian selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, for a break from red-ball cricket.
Notably, Iyer, who captained the India A side against Australia A in the first unofficial Test, has pulled out of the second unofficial Test due to personal reasons. In his absence, Dhruv Jurel has been named as the captain.
The report by The Indian Express stated that Iyer informed selectors that he is suffering from a stiff back and his body cannot take the toll of the longest format of the game anymore. Moreover, the report revealed the batter cannot be on the field for more than four days, and for the same reason, he has decided to take a break until his body allows him to play the format.
“He has informed us that he (Iyer) will be taking a break from red ball cricket and it’s good that he has cleared it out because selectors are now clear about his future. He won’t be playing red ball cricket in coming months and he has informed the board that he will assess his body in future in consultation with physios and trainer and take a call on it,” a source confirmed The Indian Express.
It’s important to note that Iyer has been in contention for the two-match Test series against West Indies, which is scheduled to start on October 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad before the action moves to New Delhi for the second Test.
In order to get some game time, Iyer was named in the India A squad for two four-day games against Australia A. Iyer had an exceptional IPL 2025 season for the Punjab Kings. However, he was excluded from the Indian T20I squad for the Asia Cup 2025 campaign.
