West Indies vs India, Day 1 (Source: Twitter)
India exhibited complete dominance over West Indies in the first of the two-Test series being played at Windsor Park, Dominica. West Indies won the toss and elected to bat on a surface that would only worsen as the days go by. On the first look, it looked like a damp track with plenty of help to bowlers, especially spin. Something similar unfolded in the Day as West Indies were bowled out for 150 runs.
Ravichandran Ashwin remained the hero with the ball for the Men in Blue picking up a five-wicket haul. He was the one who provided the breakthrough for India by dismissing the two Windies openers. He also scalped West Indies’ highest scorer Alick Athanaze who scored 47 off 99. At the same time, he also added the wickets of Alzarri Joseph and Jomel Warrican to his tally.
India’s spin twins – Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja – shared eight wickets within them
Ashwin’s spin twin Ravindra Jadeja was the second most successful bowler for the Men in Blue with figures of 3-26. Jermaine Blackwood, Joshua Da Silva, and Kemar Roach made up Jadeja’s tally of wickets for the first innings. The remaining two wickets were scalped one each by Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Siraj. Talking of West Indies’ batting, only skipper Kraigg Braithwaite and top-scorer Alick Athanaze could reach the individual run tally of 20 or more while five of their batter fell for single-digits. Surprisingly, none of them went out for ducks.
In reply, India started dominantly with debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal nearing a half-century on debut. He was made to open the innings with skipper Rohit Sharma. The duo has so far added 80 runs in 23 overs until stumps on Day 1. While Jaiswal is batting on 40* off 73 balls, the skipper finds himself poised at 30* off 65.
As things stand, the Test seems to lean completely towards India with the visitors in the driving seat. Notably, this two-Test series is both teams’ first shot at getting off the mark in the World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle. They will also contest in three ODIs and five T20Is after the Tests.
