He sustained the injury during the fourth Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Ahmedabad before IPL 2023. Then, he missed the entire IPL season for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Now, ahead of the second T20I vs Windies, Team India’s regular skipper, Rohit Sharma shared a positive update on Iyer’s status ahead of the World Cup. Currently, Rohit is not a part of the 20-20 squad as Hardik Pandya is leading the team.

Shreyas Iyer last played an ODI in January 2023

He said: “Shreyas Iyer is on the track to full fitness, so fingers crossed for World Cup.” On 21 July, the India Cricket Board shared an update regarding his fitness in a released statement. They wrote that both he and Rahul have started batting in nets along with some strength and fitness drills. They also claimed that the medical team of NCA were very happy with their progress and that’s why, they were looking to increase their intensity regarding skills, strength, and conditioning.

Speaking about Iyer, he has shown some consistency while batting in the middle order in the last few years, especially in Tests and ODIs. While batting at number 3, Iyer has an average of 59.33 while at number 4, he has an average of 47.35 in ODIs. In Tests, while batting at number 5, he has an average of 36.33 in just six innings while having an average of 46.55 at number 6 in six matches. So, if he manages to make a comeback then it will be a huge boost for Rohit Sharma and his men.
