Shubman Gill made headlines on 21 May 2023 when he smashed back-to-back centuries in the ongoing IPL. Against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, he smashed 104* runs off 52 balls and helped GT to chase down the 198-run target in 19.1 overs. Gill also won the Player of the Match award.

After this knock, Gill is now in the second spot in the race for the orange cap this season with 680 runs in 14 innings, at an average of 56.66. Till now, he has smashed four fifties also along with those two centuries. Now, ahead of qualifier 1 against CSK in Chennai on 23 May, Gill shared an image of him shirtless with only towels on.

After the knock against RCB, Gill said: "It's all about getting a start and converting it into a big one. Thankfully it's working out for me in the business end. You have to keep applying yourself, that's important. The new ball was holding on a bit. The ball was getting wet with the dew. I thought Vijay Shankar was trying to go too hard. Once he found the momentum, he hit it a long way. I know my game... for any player it's important to know who you are. I think we have a great bowling attack for that wicket."

On Gill during the post-match presentation, RCB skipper, Faf du Plessis said: "Obviously very disappointing. We got a really strong team tonight; excellent innings by Shuman Gill. There was a lot of grip in the second innings. I thought 195-200 was a good score. We needed that wicket of Shubman.” While GT skipper, Hardik Pandya also heaped praises for the star batter as he said: “As a bowler, Gill doesn't give you a chance. Other batters also get confidence from it.”
