England registered a 74-run victory in the first Test match to take a 1-0 lead in the historic series against Pakistan.

England faced Pakistan in the historic Test match at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium after a long wait of 17 years. The game was completely action-packed as close to 1800 runs were scored throughout the five days between both teams. England Captain Ben Stoke won the toss and decided to bat first and the decision worked out well for them.

England took full advantage of the venue's flat surface. The team led by Ben Stokes scored 657 runs in the first inning, with four batters going for centuries. In the game, Harry Brook, Ollie Pope, Ben Duckett, and Zak Crawley all scored centuries. Furthermore, the English team set numerous records, including the highest score on the first day of a Test match (506 runs).

In response, Pakistan produced an outstanding performance with the bat as well. Abdullah Shafique, Imam ul Haq, and Babar Azam each scored a century to help their team reach 579. After attaining a 78-run lead in the first innings, England scored 264-7 in their second innings. The three lions set a target of 343 runs thanks to half-centuries by Zak Crawley, Joe Root, and Harry Brook.

Chasing the target, the home side had some decent performances in their second innings. Imam ul Haq, Azhar Ali, Mohammad Rizwan, and Agha Salman scored some important runs in the innings, while Saud Shakeel scored 76 runs.

England bounce back in the game

However, the duo of Ollie Robbinson and James Anderson got the English side back in the game with quick wickets in the final session of day five. They got the wickets of some well-set batters. They fired Agha Salman and Azhar Ali in quick succession to put their team back in charge.

In the end, Naseem Shah and Mohammad Ali troubled the English bowlers as the lights set to fade in. The two survived for over 30 minutes in the middle together, but England held on their nerves as Jack Leech dismissed Shah in the 97th over. With this, England registered a 74-run victory to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
