Bengaluru is set to get a new cricket stadium after Karnataka’s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recently gave the green signal to a proposal from the Karnataka Housing Board (KHB). The plan is to build a world-class sports complex in Surya City, Bommasandra.

The complex will have a cricket stadium with a seating capacity of 80,000. Once completed, it will be the second-largest cricket stadium in India. The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad tops the list with a capacity of 1,32,000 spectators.

On June 4, during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL 2025 victory celebrations, a tragic stampede happened outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. This incident is believed to be a major reason behind the proposal for a new sports complex. The Justice John Michael Cunha Commission investigated the tragedy and found that the 32,000-capacity stadium, spread over just 17 acres, was unsuitable for such an event, leading to the disaster.

Speaking about it, the Karnataka CM said: "The government has not done anything wrong. This incident is saddening, but no misstep was taken by the administration. Legal action has been taken against those found guilty, so there is no question of embarrassment for the government. The government will look into shifting the cricket stadium to another location. Such an unpleasant incident should not happen under any government. Personally, this incident has hurt me and the government.”

He further added: "Five police officers have been suspended in this case. The intelligence chief and the chief minister's political secretary have been replaced. The case has been taken seriously and appropriate action has been taken."

The KHB will fully fund the proposed project, costing INR 1,650 crore, without any financial support from the state government. It will cover more than 100 acres and have both outdoor and indoor sports facilities. Along with the cricket stadium, there will be gyms, training centres, swimming pools, hostels, guest houses, and a hall.

Meanwhile, Bengaluru has also received proposals for several other sports infrastructure projects. The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has invited tenders to build a modern stadium in Dr. K. Shivaram Karanth Layout, on the city’s northern outskirts. The Greater Bengaluru Development Authority (GBDA) is also planning a sports city in Bidadi.
