Indian middle-order batter Sarfaraz Khan’s non-selection for the upcoming South Africa A series has raised eyebrows among the Indian cricketing fraternity. However, the BCCI has finally broken the silence behind his absence from the India A squad for the two-match four-day series.

In his last outing for India A, Sarfaraz scored 92 runs against the England Lions in Canterbury before an injury ruled him out of action. Nevertheless, he made a strong comeback to score a brilliant half-century for Mumbai in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season, proving his good form.

According to reports published on NDTV, a BCCI official has confirmed that Sarfaraz’s non-selection wasn’t due to non-performance or bias but because of his fitness and consistency in his form, as he has just made his comeback from an injury break.

"Sarfaraz was out with a quadriceps injury. He recently made a comeback and played the first round of the Ranji Trophy is the only competitive cricket he has played in a long time. The selectors will assess his form in the ongoing Ranji season before drafting him back into the India A set-up. Hopefully, he will get his chances soon," a BCCI official told NDTV.

Another report from PTI claimed that Sarfaraz’s non-inclusion was due to Rishabh Pant’s comeback to the No.5 spot in the red-ball set-up. Interestingly, Sarfaraz also bats at No.5 for his state team, and the only vacant spot in the Indian team at the moment is No.3, which is recently filled by Sai Sudharsan, who will act his Pant’s deputy in the South Africa A series.
