Delving into the details of the squad, KL Rahul will act as a stand-in captain in Shubman Gill’s absence. Notably, Gill has been ruled out of the ODI series due to a neck injury, which he sustained during the first Test against South Africa.

For the unversed, KL Rahul last led India in 2023 when they beat South Africa 2-1 in an ODI series. Also, vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series due to a spleen injury.

Speaking about the inclusions, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Tilak Varma, and Rishabh Pant have been included among batters, while the veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja returns to the ODI squad.

Talking about the exclusions, Axar Patel has been ousted, with Jadeja coming in. On the other hand, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested with no signs of keeper-batter Sanju Samson in the squad.

In the most recent ODI series against Australia Down Under, India suffered a 1-2 defeat. While they suffered losses to Australia in Perth and Adelaide ODIs, they made a strong comeback in the Sydney ODI. Rohit Sharma was awarded the player of the series for his century and a half-century in the series.

India’s ODI squad for South Africa series: Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul (c and wk), Rishabh Pant (wk), Tilak Varma, Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, Dhruv Jurel.
