The veteran pacer Mohammed Shami was once again left out of the next two-match Test series against South Africa at home, leaving the mystery surrounding his persistent absence from Team India unsolved. New information regarding the India bowler that clarifies his current situation has surfaced amid the ongoing conflict between Mohammed Shami and Ajit Agarkar, the head of the BCCI selection committee.
After being left out of the South Africa Tests despite bowling 93 overs and taking 15 wickets in three Ranji Trophy matches, Shami recently lashed out at the selectors for "not communicating" with him. As it happens, a BCCI representative has refuted Shami's allegations and stated publicly that the 35-year-old openly rejected the board's request for him to play in the England Tests.
The report adds that “the pacer responded by saying that he still needs to build his workload and shouldn’t be considered for the assignment.”
A senior BCCI official told PTI, “There have been multiple times that national selectors and support staff from the BCCI Centre of Excellence have called to check on Shami. The selection committee was desperate to get his services in England as Jasprit Bumrah could not have played more than three Tests. Who wouldn’t want a bowler of his calibre in English conditions?”
The official further stated, “So the narrative that there was no communication with Shami isn’t an absolute truth. The sports science team also has his medical reports and whether his body will be able to take the rigours of international cricket.”
Whether Mohammed Shami will return or not is unclear. He bowled 93 overs and claimed 15 wickets throughout the first three rounds of the Ranji Trophy 2025–2026. The door appears to be closed for Shami in tests, as Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna, and others have made significant contributions. The selectors have started to overlook the potential of Mohammad Shami, even though he has consistently proven his brilliance at the biggest stages of all.
