On 28 June 2023, the second Test of the ongoing Ashes series was all set to take place at the Lord’s. After losing the first match, England were looking for a comeback while the Aussies were looking for a 2-0 lead. In the World Test Championship (WTC) final, he grabbed four wickets. But, fans were surprised not to see him in action in the series opener. Ahead of the second Test, the Aussie skipper, Pat Cummish had a chat with reporters and said that he would wait to see the pitch on the day of the match to take a call on Starc’s selection.

"I'm used to it now coming to England.” - Mitchell Starc

Even, Starc also opened up regarding that in an interview on ESPNcricinfo. He said: "I'm used to it now coming to England. It's a squad mentality, much the same as last time. Been around long enough, been dropped enough. Probably dropped the most in this squad. Not something new to me, won't be the last time, either. It's never fun, everyone wants to play. I came into that game feeling pretty good, but then my rhythm wasn't quite there. It's been a good couple of weeks of work to get back into that rhythm. We were all better for the run after that Test final at The Oval and I certainly feel less clunky than I did throughout the game.”

Speaking of the match, England skipper, Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to bowl first. But, at the toss, Cummins said that Mitchell Starc has been added to the playing XI, replacing Scott Boland. He said: "We would have had a bowl as well. We just wanted some variety. We're really happy with how Scott has been going. Unfortunately he is the one to miss out this week but we're excited to have someone of Starcy's class come back in."
