Ben Stokes, England (Source: Twitter)
Despite a valiant knock of 155 runs, Ben Stokes, England’s skipper could not take his team over the finish line in the second Test of Ashes 2023. The home team fell short of the target by 44 runs as the Aussies took away the game by 43 runs to make it 2-0 in favour of the visitors. While Australia look like a dominant force on English lands winning the first two of the five-Test Ashes series, England’s skipper believes otherwise despite being 2-0 down in the series.
In the post-match presentation, Stokes said that England are still very much alive in the series. He said, "Having experienced something like that before <Headingley 2019> you are able to look back and have some sort of game plan. I was able to take that into this innings - unfortunately, it just wasn't enough. It got to the point that Australia changed their plans for me so I had to change my plans as well. It is a tough one to swallow getting so close. We are 2-0 down but have won series 3-0 in the past so know we can do it."
Ben Stokes defended ‘Bazball’ following England’s defeat in Test 2 of Ashes 2023
England’s aggressive approach to the longest format, dubbed ‘Bazball’ after current head coach Brendon McCullum, was under the scanner following its inability to produce results against Australia. However, Ben Stokes was also quoted as trying to defend their new approach in the same ceremony. "Reckless is an easy word to use. What Brendon McCullum, myself, and the other coaches have done is give clarity. We are not saying, 'Go and play this way against a certain type of bowling'. I might play it differently to everyone else but there is clarity," he said.
"It's very exciting to know that the way in which we are playing our cricket actually couldn't be more perfect for the situation we find ourselves in - we have to win these three games to get this urn back. All we're thinking about is winning the series 3-2,” the England skipper added.

Well it is a must win and the bright side is if they win Headingley they are 2-1 down going into final two tests and straight back into mix. That is how they need to look at things.
