Bangladesh squad announced for T20Is vs Sri Lanka; five players excluded

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced their T20I squad for the upcoming three-match series against Sri Lanka, scheduled to take place later this month. Interestingly, selectors have dropped Najmul Hossain Shanto from the squad.

It’s important to note that Shanto stepped down from T20I captaincy earlier this year. Moreover, though he was part of the T20I series against UAE and Pakistan, he was part of the playing XI in only one of those six games.

In the 2024 calendar year, Shanto averaged only 18.84 with 358 runs from 20 innings, with his highest score being an unbeaten 53. Earlier in 2023, he scored 218 runs from 10 innings at an average of 31.14.

On the other hand, left-handed opening batter Mohammad Naim has been recalled to replace Shanto. Also, pacers Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, and Mohammad Saifuddin find their spots in the squad. Saifuddin is returning to the squad after a gap of more than a year.

Furthermore, Nasum Ahmed has replaced Tanvir Islam, while Shoriful Islam has been retained in the squad. It’s worth noting that Naim found his form during the 2024-25 domestic season, scoring 827 runs at an average of 37.59 and a strike rate of 140.4, which includes a century and six half-centuries.

Bangladesh will lock horns with Sri Lanka in three T20Is on July 10 in Pallekele, July 13 in Dambulla, and July 16 in Colombo.
