On 12 July 2023, Team India began their tour of the West Indies by taking them in the first of the two-match Test series in Dominica. However, India went with Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja as their two spinners. So, after not getting any chance in the playing XI for the WTC final against Australia, all eyes were on Ashwin.

Rohit Sharma and Team India management got bashed brutally on social media for not considering Ashwin in the playing XI for the final after losing it. However, Ashwin managed to show his worth once again as he picked 12 wickets in total in the game. His performance was instrumental as India defeated WI by an innings and 141 runs.

Ravichandran Ashwin registered his best overseas figures with a seven-for in the second innings vs WI in the first Test 

Speaking of the match, WI got bundled out for just 150 runs in their first innings as Ashwin was the star. He took five wickets for 60 runs in 24.3 overs. Then, in reply, the Men in Blue declared their first innings after scoring 421 runs for five wickets and managed a lead of 271 runs. But, in the second innings also, Ashwin took seven wickets for 71 runs in 21.3 overs as the home side got bundled out for just 130 runs. Thus, Rohit and his men took a 1-0 lead. However, debutant, Yashasvi Jaiswal was adjusted the Player of the Match for his mammoth knock of 171 runs.

Ashwin’s spinning partner, Ravindra Jadeja also had a good game with the ball as he took five wickets in total. Regarding their combination, during the post-match presentation, skipper Rohit said: The results speak for themselves. Both have been doing it for a while, so they know exactly what is expected from them. Don't have to tell them much, just about going out and giving them freedom to express. And when you have the kind of experience they have on these pitches, it is always a luxury. But you still have to pitch it... both Ashwin and Jadeja were magnificent, especially Ashwin.”
