There is no better sight than to see a batsman leaning forward and creaming a drive through the covers. It’s a high scoring shot but requires proper execution as even a minor error can get the batsman caught behind the wickets. However, when it comes off, it is one of the most eye-pleasing shots you’ll ever see. When you think of a cover drive which name comes to your mind? Brian Lara ? Yuvraj Singh ? or Sachin Tendulkar ? What about the modern day players ?
The ICC recently conducted a poll on its Twitter handle to find out the best cover driver in world cricket and Pakistan’s Babar Azam piped India’s Virat Kohli, New Zealand’s Kane Williamson and England’s Joe Root to become the undisputed ‘ king of the cover drive’. Azam narrowly edged Kohli by 0.1 votes. While 45.9 percent people voted in favour of Kohli, Babar had a vote share of 46 percent. Kane Williamson and Joe Root couldn’t even compete. Both Babar Azam and Virat Kohli are among the best players of the modern generation. While Kohli has established himself as a legend of the game, Babar Azam still has a lot to prove. However, he’s made a scintillating start to his career.
