Lalit Modi on IPL (Image Source: Twitter)
Indian Premier League (IPL) has become a festival for cricket fans all around the world for its entertainment over all these years. Currently, the 16th edition of the competition is happening. Before this season, IPL made headlines as both the TV and Digital Media Rights of the league got sold at a hefty amount and it broke all the records of previous years.
Now, during this ongoing tournament, Lalit Modi came up with a bold statement. Lalit Modi was the founder, first chairman, and League Commissioner of the IPL in 2008. He even ran the tournament for three years until 2010. After that, he got accused of misconduct, indiscipline, and financial irregularities.
“It won't be long before the IPL becomes the No. 1 league in any sport in the world.” - Lalit Modi
The Indian Cricket Board suspended him and ran an investigation against him, Due to these charges, Lalit Modi got banned for life in 2013. Now, on 31 April 2023, the 1000th game of the IPL took place at Wankhede Stadium. On that special occasion, Modi held a conversation with Cricbuzz from his London residence.
He said: "For me it is a dream and it's very personal. I wish to thank them (fans, players, stakeholders and regulators) all for their support. Thank you for making the IPL what it is. It's really an emotional time. It is amazing to see the IPL grow so fast and become the second biggest league in the world in terms of value. In terms of viewership, it is No 1. More important than that is the number of youngsters we have seen in the landscape of the country. And the infrastructure that has come up across India. That is the byproduct of the IPL's growth."
"It's all because of the fans and how they have embraced the league. It's only looking like it is growing from strength to strength. It won't be long before the IPL becomes the No. 1 league in any sport in the world. It is behind the NFL now, No. 2 currently. Going by the rate and speed of the IPL's growth, that day is not too far," Modi further added. Hearing such bold claims, fans shared their views on social media.
