On 11 June 2023, India suffered a 209-run loss against Australia at the Oval in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. However, Shubman Gill had a disaster of a match where he scored only 31 runs in two innings. But, his dismissal in the second innings made headlines. Cameron Green took a brilliant catch but the umpire was not sure whether it was cleanly taken or not.

Then, the third umpire had a look and he decided to give out Gill. But, the batter was not happy as he shared an image of that catch to take a sarcastic dig at the umpire. Regarding that, the former Aussie batters, Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer came up with their views during the match.

Shubman Gill was not happy with the decision from the third umpire

While speaking on Channel 7, Langer said: “One of the challenges now of a modern-day cricketer is there’s so much social media. The Gill tweet I think is a bit irresponsible shows some inexperience. This is the world we live in with social media.” While Ponting said: “Something is definitely going to come of that. There will be some sort of fine, or maybe even a suspension. That is a direct crack at the umpire for the decision that they made. You can’t do that. The whole world was going to do that for him â€æ he didn’t need to say a word.”

Now, news have come out that Shubman Gill has been fined 15% for showing dissent over the third umpire’s decision. However, he also got fined 100% of his match fees as the whole of Team India got fined due to slow overrate. Gill came to the final after winning the Orange Cap in the recently concluded IPL for Gujarat Titans. He smashed 890 runs in the tournament, including three centuries and four fifties but failed to continue that form in the final at the Oval against the Aussies.
