Bangladesh pulled off a narrow eight-run win over Afghanistan in the ninth match of the ongoing Asia Cup 2025 in Abu Dhabi on September 16. After posting 154/5 while batting first, the Bangladesh bowlers bundled out Afghanistan for 146.
Bangladesh opted to bat first after winning the toss. They had a good start as the opening pair of Saif Hassan and Tanzid Hasan added 63 runs in 6.4 overs for the first wicket. Saif scored 30 off 28 while Tanzid added 52 off 31, striking at 167.74.
However, after that partnership, they continued to lose wickets at regular intervals. Players like Towhid Hridoy (26 off 20), Shamim Hossain (11 off 11), Jaker Ali (unbeaten 12 off 13), and Nurul Hasan (unbeaten 12 off six balls) got starts but failed to convert them into big scores as they ended up with 154/5 in 20 overs.
For Afghanistan, skipper Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad bagged two wickets each, while Azmatullah Omarzai chipped in with one wicket.

In reply, Nasum Ahmed gave two early setbacks to the Afghans by picking up the wicket of Sediqullah Atal for a golden duck and Ibrahim Zadran for just five runs off 12 balls. Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored 35 off 31 but at one stage, they were reduced to 77/5 in 13 overs.
Then, Omarzai (30 off 16, at a strike rate of 187.50) and Noor (20 off 11 balls, at a strike rate of 155.55) scored some quickfire runs, but in the end, it was not enough as they were bundled out for 146 in 20 overs.
For Bangladesh, Mustafizur Rahman starred with the ball, taking three wickets. Along with him, Taskin Ahmed, Rishad Hossain, and Nasum Ahmed bagged two wickets each.
With this win, Bangladesh are now in second spot in Group B with four points in three games, with a net run rate of -0.270. Meanwhile, this loss has pushed the Afghans to the third spot in the table, with two points in two games along with a net run rate of +2.150.
