Afghanistan have been knocked out of the ongoing Asia Cup 2025 after Sri Lanka defeated them by six wickets in Abu Dhabi in their final Group B clash. With this win, Sri Lanka stayed unbeaten and finished on top of the group with six points from three matches. Bangladesh, with four points from three games, joined them in the ‘Super 4’ stage.
In the 11th match of the tournament, Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bat first. They posted a competitive 169/8 in 20 overs, thanks largely to veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi, who played a blistering knock of 60 runs off 22 balls. Earlier, Afghanistan were in deep trouble at 79/6, but Nabi revived the innings with two crucial partnerships.
He added 35 runs for the seventh wicket with Rashid Khan, who scored 24, before stitching a rapid 55-run stand off just 18 balls with Noor Ahmad. Ibrahim Zadran also contributed 24 runs at the top.
For Sri Lanka, Nuwan Thushara starred with the ball, finishing with figures of 4/18. Dushmantha Chameera, Dunith Wellalage, and skipper Dasun Shanaka picked up one wicket each.
Let’s take a look at Sri Lanka’s Chase
Chasing 170, Sri Lanka crossed the finish line with eight balls and six wickets to spare. Kusal Mendis anchored the chase with a superb unbeaten 74 off 52 deliveries. He was well supported by Kusal Perera (28 off 20), captain Charith Asalanka (17 off 12), and Kamindu Mendis, who provided the finishing touches with an unbeaten 26 off 13 balls.
Kusal Mendis was named the Player of the Match for his match-winning knock. Reflecting on his performance, he said: “Very happy with my innings, supported really well by Kamindu and Kusal (Perera). Everyone supported me, I enjoyed my innings.”
