On 3 September 2023, the fourth game of the ongoing Asia Cup took place in Lahore between Bangladesh and Afghanistan. It was a must-win encounter for the Bangla Tigers and they did not disappoint their fans. They won the game by 89 runs and kept themselves alive in the tournament. Mehidy Hasan Miraz won the Player of the Match award for his all-round performance while their pacers also performed exceptionally well while defending 334 runs.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s Scintillating Ton

Bangladesh fans were left surprised when they saw Mehidy Hasan Miraz coming out as an opener along with Mohammad Naim. In the first match against Sri Lanka, he batted at the number seven position and scored only five runs off 11 balls. But, in this match, he grabbed the opportunity with both hands and smashed 112* runs off 119 balls before getting retired hurt. He smashed seven fours and three sixes. Mehidy looked very calm and composed while putting up a mammoth 194*-run partnership for the third wicket with Shanto.

Najmul Hossain Shanto’s consistency

Bangladesh suffered a batting collapse against Sri Lanka in their first game and got bundled out for just 164 runs. But, Najmul Hossain Shanto was the lone warrior as he scored 89 runs off 122 balls. Now, in this match, Shanto continued his form and notched up a century. He scored 104 runs off 105 balls, including nine fours and two sixes. He also stitched the 194*-run partnership for the third wicket with Mehidy.   

Ibrahim Zadran and Hashmatullah Shahidi's fight goes in vain

Afghanistan had a disappointing start to their 335-run target after losing Rahmanullah Gurbaz for just one run. But, after that, Ibrahim Zadran scored 75 runs off 74 balls and skipper, Hashmatullah Shahidi smashed 51 runs off 60 balls. But, their efforts went in vain as the next batters failed to score big and finally, they fell short by 89 runs with 5.3 overs to spare. Ibrahim put up a 78-run partnership for the second wicket with Rahmat Shah while Shahidi stitched a 62-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Najibullah Zadran.
