On 19 July, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) announced the full schedule of the Asia Cup 2023. It will be the 16th edition of this prestigious tournament that will begin on 30 August in Multan, Pakistan. The tournament will take place as per the proposed Hybrid model by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Pakistan, India, and Nepal are in the Group A while Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan are in the Group B. The host nation, Pakistan will begin their campaign on the opening day against Nepal. India will take on the Men in Green on 2 September in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Rohit Sharma and his men will play all of their matches in Sri Lanka.
India are the most successful team in Asia Cup history with 7 titles
Only four matches will be played in Pakistan while the other nine matches will be played in Sri Lanka. Speaking of the format of the tournament, three teams from each group will play against each other once in round 1. Then, two teams from each group will qualify for round 2, ‘Super 4s’. Then, the top two teams from that stage will play the final on 17 September at R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, Sri Lanka. In Pakistan, four matches will be played across Multan and Karachi.
While in Sri Lanka, matches will be played across Kandy, Dambulla, and Colombo. One of the ‘Super 4s’ clashes will take place in Pakistan while the other five matches will be played in Sri Lanka. The Lankans will look to defend the title as they won the last edition in 2022. However, that edition was in a 20-20 format. But, this year, it will be in a 50-over format and hence, apart from Nepal, this event can be a great platform for other teams to get prepared for the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup in India, starting on 5 October.
