On Friday, May 23, former Sri Lanka captain Angelo Matthews took to his social media platforms to announce his Test retirement after the conclusion of the first Test against Bangladesh at the Galle Cricket Stadium in June 2025.
Mathews, who made his Test debut in Galle against Pakistan in 2009, has played a crucial role for his national team for over 15 years, both as a captain and as an all-rounder. Notably, he emerged as Sri Lanka’s third most successful Test captain, winning 13 out of 34 Tests between 2013 and 2017.
Matthews has represented Sri Lanka in 118 matches, scoring 8167 runs at an average of 44.62 with 16 centuries and 45 half-centuries. He was only behind Kumar Sangakkara (12,400) and Mahela Jayawardene (11,814) for most Test runs by a Sri Lankan batter.

"It is time for me to say goodbye to the most cherished format of the game, International Test Cricket!” he wrote on his social media platforms.
"The past 17 years of playing cricket for Sri Lanka has been my highest honour and pride. Nothing can match that feeling of patriotism and servitude when one dons the National Jersey,” Angelo Matthews added.
"I have given my everything to cricket and Cricket has given me everything in return and made me the person that I am today. I stand grateful to the game and thankful to the thousands of Sri Lanka Cricket fans who have been there for me throughout my career during my highest of highs and lowest of lows,” he continued.
"The first Test match against Bangladesh in June will be my last red-ball appearance for my country,” he concluded.
However, Mathews will continue to be a part of the selection across white ball formats. Notably, he last played a limited-overs game in the group stage game against New Zealand at the ICC ODI World Cup in 2023.
