Former Indian spinner Amit Mishra, who announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Thursday, September 4, has revealed that the uncertainty around getting a place in the Indian team got pretty frustrating for him during his playing days.
Speaking exclusively on PTI Videos, Mishra also realized that he was one of the 15 players in the Indian team when millions of people have been working so hard to get to that place, stating that his dream was always to play the sport for India.
“It was a very disappointing thing. Sometimes you’re in the team, sometimes you’re out. Sometimes you get a chance in the playing eleven, sometimes you don’t. Of course, it’s frustrating, and I was frustrated many times, no doubt,” Mishra told PTI Videos in an exclusive interview.
“But then you remember that your dream is to play cricket for India. You are with the national team, and millions of people are working so hard just to be there. You are one of the 15 players on the Indian team. So, I tried to stay positive,” he added.
Mishra, who last played an international game against England in Bengaluru in 2017, has also asserted that whenever he got a chance to represent the Indian team, he performed well and never shied away from hard work.
“Whenever I was frustrated, I thought about what I could improve on. Whether it was my fitness, batting, or bowling, I always focused on getting better. Whenever I got a chance to play for the Indian team, I performed well, and I’m very happy about that. I never shied away from hard work,” he noted.
Mishra's last competitive game came in the IPL 2024 season for the Lucknow Super Giants franchise against the Rajasthan Royals. In 22 Tests, he scalped 76 wickets, while he pocketed 64 wickets from 36 ODIs, with 16 wickets from 10 T20Is.
