The Major League Cricket 2023 saw its conclusion with the high-octane final played on Sunday, July 30. Seattle Orcas had earlier reached the finals by defeating the Texas Super Kings in the first qualifier. For MI New York, the second finalist, the road was not that simple. They had to win two games, first, the qualifier against Washington Freedom and then the second qualifier against the Texas Super Kings. Ultimately, they went through the longer way but ended up winning the league.

Talking of the final game, MI New York won the toss and elected to bowl first. The Seattle Orcas put up a competitive 183/9 batting first on the scoreboard, led by the heroic efforts of opening batter Quinton de Kock, who scored a brilliant 87 off 52, including nine fours and four sixes at the strike rate of 167.31. Barring him, only three other Orcas’ batters – Shehan Jayasuriya (16 off 15), Shubham Ranjane (29 off 16), and Dwaine Pretorius (21 off 7) could reach double-digit scores. For MI New York, both Trent Boult and Rashid Khan returned with three-wicket hauls while Steven Taylor and David Wiese scalped one wicket each.

Nicholas Pooran was awarded the ‘Man of the Match’

Much like Orcas’ batting performance, New York’s chase was also a one-man show. They lost their opener Steven Taylor without a single run on the scoreboard. Shayan Jahangir, his opening partner departed after scoring 10 off 11 balls after a 62-run one-sided partnership with the star of the show skipper Nicholas Pooran. He smashed 137 off 55 balls, including 10 fours and 13 massive sixes, at a strike rate of 249.09. Dewald Brevis contributed with 20 off 18 while Tim David remained not out at 10 off 9.

Talking of Orcas’ bowling, there was not much to note. Skipper Wayne Parnell and Imad Wasim scalped one wicket each as MI batters took the game to them with fabulous hitting. MI New York skipper Nicholas Pooran was adjudged the ‘Man of the Match’ for his match-winning knock of 137.
