Indian seamer Akash Deep’s sister, Akhand Jyoti Singh, has revealed that she was watching India’s post-match winning celebrations and ceremony after India bagged a 336-run win over England in the Birmingham Test to level the series 1-1.
Akash, who scalped a 10-wicket match haul to emerge as the second Indian bowler after Chetan Sharma to achieve the feat in England, dedicated his performance to his elder sister, who was battling with cancer for the past two months.
“We were all watching the ceremony when I heard him talking about my health and fight with cancer. I never imagined he would speak about it publicly, he must have said it out of emotion,” Jyoti told The Indian Express at her residence.
The eldest of six siblings, Jyoti has always shared a close bond with Akash Deep, the youngest. Their father, Ramji Singh, a government schoolteacher, and their brother, Dheeraj Singh, both passed away in 2015.
It’s important to note that Jyoti, the eldest sibling, has always had a close bond with the youngest sibling, Akash. Notably, their father, Ramji Singh, and brother, Dheeraj Singh, passed away in 2015.
“After those two deaths, Akash became especially close to me. I don’t know what was going on in his mind when he spoke on stage, but I believe it came from the heart,” said Akhand Jyoti, a graduate and homemaker,” she revealed.
“On Tuesday morning, we spoke to him over a video call. When we asked why he mentioned it, he didn’t really answer, just said he couldn’t hold it in. I think it was out of love. Even in such a high-pressure moment, he was thinking of me,” she stated.
For the unversed, Akash, after winning the second Test with a 10-wicket haul, revealed that his elder sister has been suffering from cancer and he dedicated his performance to her to see a smile on her face.
“I have not told this to anyone. My elder sister has been suffering from cancer for the last two months. She is stable now and doing fine. I think she will be the happiest seeing my performance. I want to dedicate this match to her. I just wanted to see a smile on her face,” Akash told Sony Sports after the match.
“This is for you. Whenever I held the ball in my hand, your face was on my mind. I want to see happiness on your face. We are all with you,” he added after the game.
