Before the selection day, it was generally assumed that Rohit Sharma would continue to captain India's one-day international team. Rohit was still the favourite to captain the ODI team in their brief three-match series in Australia in October, even though he hadn't played competitive cricket since the IPL 2025 in June. But when chief selector Ajit Agarkar revealed the 15-man squad at a press conference in Ahmedabad on Saturday, October 4, Shubman Gill took his spot.

Shubman Gill has called his appointment as India's ODI captain the "biggest honour" and said he is proud to continue Rohit Sharma's legacy. Rohit will play under Gill throughout the forthcoming three-match series in Australia. With the 2027 World Cup in mind, the Indian selectors made a big decision on Saturday by removing Rohit from his position as ODI captain and giving the reins to young Test captain Gill.

Gill was chosen as the ODI captain because former India bowler and current Chief Selector, Agarkar, stated that having three different leaders in three different formats is nearly impossible.

"It's practically impossible to have three different captains for three formats, just in terms of planning. Obviously, at some stage, you have to start looking at where the next World Cup will be; it's also a format that is played the least now. So you don't get that many games to actually give the next guy, or if there is going to be another guy, that much time to prepare himself or plan," he added.

The 38-year-old's victory in the Champions Trophy just eight months prior and his two ICC titles in ten months following an absurdly lengthy 11-year wait were of little consequence when Shubman Gill took over as the ODI captain.

Ever since this news has come into the public domain, the audience has been enraged. With everyone, and especially Rohit, being immensely invested in the World Cup, everybody wanted him to continue, and if a replacement was seen, then Shreyas Iyer was a better fit for the leadership role. But it has been established that the BCCI’s poster boy, Shubhman Gill, will continue to lead the Men in Blue.
